Why didn't anyone tell me about tar-mode?

I mistakenly pressed RET over a tarball in dired, and got a dired interface which lists the contents of that tarball! Just to check that I'm not completely senile, I fired up Emacs 21 and just got the binary contents of the tarball. So somewhere between Emacs 21 and the CVS Emacs 23 I'm using tar-mode was introduced (the NEWS file is silent about this), and it rocks.
